Meet Your Mentor: The Composer Behind the Course

Learn from George Marshall, an award-winning composer and educator, with a decade of experience in bringing music to life across film, video games, and concert halls.

George Marshall

Composer, Instructor & Founder

For over a decade, I’ve dedicated my life to music—composing, arranging, and teaching. From crafting scores for video games and films to writing works for the concert hall, my passion has always been helping music come to life. I hold a PhD in Music Composition from the University of Hull, where my research focused on how creative constraints shape the composition process. Throughout my career, I’ve composed for over 60 projects, including internationally screened films and video games showcased at EGX. One of my proudest achievements was winning the 21st Century Classical Music Solo Piano Composition Competition in 2018 for my piece Nocturne, originally written for a video game. My work extends beyond composition. In 2017, I was commissioned to create three scores for the Hull Maritime Museum’s City of Culture installation, an exhibit visited by over 100,000 people. Working with student volunteers, I composed, conducted, and produced the final recordings—an experience that solidified my love for collaboration and education. These days, my focus is on sharing knowledge. My analysis and composition videos have reached thousands of viewers, with my most popular videos on tintinnabuli receiving more engagement than those on John Williams, Chopin, Mozart, or Bach. I’ve worked with students from all backgrounds, helping them develop their own musical voices by embracing structure and clarity in their compositions. Now, through this course, I want to pass on what I’ve learned. Whether you're new to composition or an experienced musician looking for a fresh perspective, I’m here to guide you through the fascinating world of music composition step-by-step.

What Makes This Course Stand Out

Discover a Transformative Approach to Composition

Tintinnabuli music isn’t just a compositional technique—it’s a philosophy. Developed by Arvo Pärt, one of the most performed living composers globally, this method takes simplicity to profound heights. By focusing on rule-based structure and the interplay between melody and harmony, tintinnabuli offers composers a clear, meditative framework that unlocks creativity while maintaining a sense of order. This course delves deep into every aspect of this approach, ensuring you not only understand the technique but can apply it confidently to create your own reflective masterpieces.

A Clear Path from Beginner to Mastery

One of the greatest strengths of this course is its accessibility. Whether you're a seasoned composer or just beginning your journey, the structured lessons guide you through the complexities of tintinnabuli step-by-step. Each module builds upon the last, moving seamlessly from foundational principles to advanced applications. You’ll learn to:

  • Understand the origins of tintinnabuli in medieval organum and the overtone series of bells.
  • Grasp the core concept of dual voices: the M-voice (melodic) and the T-voice (triadic).
  • Explore voice-leading techniques, including superior and inferior relationships, and positional dynamics.
  • Create compositions that balance emotional depth with structural clarity.

By the end of the course, you’ll not only have a thorough theoretical understanding but also practical experience in crafting your own tintinnabuli works.
